Scalability in Web Imagery
The scalability fallacy principle applies to more than just when man tried to scale the structure of the bird in our quest for human flight. This principle applies to imagery for mobile web design.
'On the Go"
Successful web sites have a mobile presence that is not a ‘scaled-down version’ of the desktop site. User behavior ‘on the go’ requires addressing the ‘core usages’ and features of your product or service. For photographers the blunt fact is that we must streamline the compositions of our commercial work eliminating distracting elements and hues the complicate the intended story of the photograph.
We are experiencing a trend in what called ‘mobile first’ design. This means building the web site with the mobile layout as the primary landing page for the product or organization. Presently, some 70% of web site views originate from a mobile device (phone or tablet and that number is growing. I think it’s safe to say that we as designers and photographers are finally starting to get this.
To challenge ourselves:
• How can I capture an image and manipulate the composition to be effective in a mobile AND larger desktop
• What can I eliminate from my images composition that still delivers the message and holds together?
